Alternating-current relays. - A tuned eletromagnetic device adapted for distant control operable in response to two different frequencies of current has a polarizing-magnet 1 (Figs. 1 and 2) with pole pieces 2, 3 carrying parallel connected windings 4, 5 tuned by series condensers 7, 8. Reeds 9,10 are arranged adjacent to the corresponding pole-pieces so that one of the reeds' is arranged to operate mechanism shown in Fig. 3 which consists of a shaft 20 carrying a satellite wheel 19 meshed with differential wheels 17, 18 connected to corresponding toothed wheels 15, 16 acted upon by pawls 13, 14 carried by the reeds 9, 10. Thus if one or other of the reeds is set in vibration the corresponding differential wheel is stepped round causing a rotation of the shaft 20 in one or other direction. The shaft 20 is connected by gearing 21 - - 24 to a shaft 25 which may carry a rocking mercury switch and when this has been moved sufficiently to produce a switching operation further stepping round movement of the pawl is prevented by its being engaged by one of the sides 28, 29 of a stop member 27 secured to the shaft 25, Fig. 4. Alternatively this member could be arranged to engage the corresponding vibrating strip 9, 10 at the completion of the switching mevement. By substituting a lever for the mercury switch the mechanism may be arranged to control the clutch lever of a double tariff electric meter.
