UNITED STATES rnrnnr OFFICE.
CLARENCE A. BODDIE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
' ELECTRIC-CURRENT METER.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. Bonnrn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny -The object of my invention is to provide an escapement device of the above indlcated character that shall have electromagnetic means for controlling or restoring its oscillating member in accordance with any desired conditions. V
My copending S. application, Serial No. 88,974, filed on evendate herewith, discloses an escapement device for a meter having a non-restrained balance wheel that permits its oscillating member to be controlled in accordance with the force applied to its escapement wheel, or, in other words, in accordance with the square of the current traversing the main winding of the meter.
The ordinary clock escapement device is usually provided with a hair spring that permits the main spring of the clock to be released at a constant rate. Such an escapement device would not be applicable to measuring instruments where it is desired to so control the oscillations of the movable.
member of the escapement device that it will oscillate in accordance with predetermined varying conditions. In view of the above, I provide a restoring or controlling device for the oscillating member of an escapement de vice comprising a magnetizable member and a winding that tends to yieldinglyhold the magnetizable member in a predetermined position. I connect the magnetizable member to the double pallet or the oscillating member of the escapement device to thus control its operation in accordance with the current traversing the winding. Such an escapement device may be used to retard the time of movement of a movable member of a maximum-demand meter, or it may be used to so damp the movement of the movable member of an ampere-hour meter that it will rotate more nearly in accordance with the current traversing its windings.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed April 4, 1916. Seria1 No. 88,972.
IThesingle figure of the accompanying drawing a diagrammatic view of an esoapement device embodying myinvention.
' An electrical measuring instrument 1, in connection with which my escapement device 2 may be used, comprises-a magnetizable core memberB, a main winding 4, auxiliary windings 5 and 6 and an armature 7 that is mounted on a shaft 8 upon whicha pointer 9 is also mounted.
A gear wheel 10 is mounted on the shaft 8 and is adapted to engage a pinion 11 that is mounted on a shaft 12. An escapement wheel is also mounted on the shaft 12 and adapted to cooperate with a double pallet'yl4 that is pivoted on a shaft 15'. The double pallet 14 is provided with a forked end 16. The magnet winding 17 loosely surrounds a pivoted magnetizable core 1ne1nber 18 that is provided with a pin 19 which is adapted to be disposed between the spacedapart portions ofthe forked end 16 of the double pallet 14. The windings 4 and 17 are connected in series with a conductor 20 of a' circuit 21, and the windings 5 and 6 are connected in a closed circuit with respect to each other.
If the escapementdevice- 2 were not provided, and current traversed the circuit 1 and the armature 7, the pointer 9 would be moved in accordance with the square of the current traversing the circuit 21. If an ordinary hair-spring escapement device were connected to the shaft 8, the pointer 9 would be retarded a constant amount. However, this is not desired, but, on the contrary, it is desired to retard the pointer 9in accordance with some variablecondition or force, and,
in thisfinstance, the retardation should be such that the pointer 9 will move in accordance with the current traversing the circuit 21. Since the magnetizable core member 18 tends to assume a central position in accordance with the current that traverses the winding 17, its vibration or restoring force may be assumed to vary substantially in accordance with the square of the current traversing the circuit 21. Thus, the pointer 9 will move in accordance with the current traversing the circuit 21.
When the escapement device 2 is used, the escapement wheel 13 will tend to turn in accordance with the torque of the armature 7 and will, consequently, cause the double pallet to move in one direction. When the 0 I a r,
double pallet moves, the movable core member 18 Will be moved from its normal position, .and the current. traversing thewmdmg 17 Willicause it to return to 'itsno'r'mal posl' tion to move-the double pallet in the 0 posite' direction. In this manner5 th' -do bl'e pallet lit may be caused to so oscillate that thepointer f9, will move in accordance Wlth the current traversing the circuit 7 While I have illustrated my invention in co nect w t a p cu a i ype vflnet it"tvilhbe indersto dthat itiis not, solinnted, as ma n 'mo cl'ificat ns any beinadeiin "my l iOn wi at; hit fi gi' 'bii f th append dela 1 "I alm as in invention:
