Fuel, feeding.- In furnaces provided withmechanical grates supplied with fuel from a hopper mounted or. the furnace, combustion of the fuel in the lower part of the hopper is prevented by spraying water into the lower part thereof. As shown in Fig. 1, the hopper 2 is provided with a perforated water sup ply pipe 10 shielded by a plate 12. Water passing through the grate 4 is caught by a trough 14 having an outlet pipe at one end and mounted in such a manner that it may be tilted to discharge any accumulated ashes. A modified form of trough is shown in Fig. 3 having a water channel 26 to which entrance of ash is prevented by a shield 28.
