Abstract

276,921. Eaton, W. S. May 2, 1927. Cells; electrodes; chromium, depositing; metals, pickling; metals, removing; electrolytes, heating and ccoling. - Apparatus for chromium plating, particularly of printing plates, and subsidiary operations comprises a tank 13 for removing former coatings, a cleaning tank 13 and plating tanks 11, 12 supported on angle irons forming part of a rectangular framework; the space above the tanks is enclosed, the housing being provided with vent pipes 32, 33 connected to an exhaust fan 34 for the removal of fumes, and a hinged door 22 opening downwards. The tanks 11, 12 are separated from the tanks 10, 13 by an insulating partition 25. The tanks are of metal and are insulated from their supports and from one another. The front and sides of the tanks are provided with linings 10<a> - - 13<a> of glass or other insulating material, the exposed back surface forming an auxiliary anode in the plating tanks and a main electrode in the other tanks. The main plating anodes 30 are supported by a bus-bar 29. A work-supporting bus-bar 31 extends along all the tanks. The tanks may be initially heated by gas-burners 37; to prevent over-heating due to electrolyte action, the plating tanks may be cooled by a fan (not shown), mounted on a shelf at the side of the frame. The apparatus is supplied with current by a motor-generator 38 provided with an input switch 40, output switch 41, and a double-pole change-over switch 44, one pole 45 of which is connected to the bus-bar 29 and the tanks 10, 13 and the outer pole 46 to the busbar 31. For cleaning, the work is connected as cathode and for stripping as anode. The cleaning solution is alkaline and the plating solution of chromic acid and an alkali. The plating temperature is 110-130‹ F., the voltage 5-10, and the current density 1-2 amps. per sq. in.
