Abstract

276,468. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Atlantic Precision Co.). June 25, 1926. Indicating apparatus. - For measuring the moisture content of paper &c., the material is brought into proximity to, but not into actual contact with, a hygroscopic body, the moisture content of which is measured. The hygroscopic body preferably forms the dielectric of a condenser, the capacity of which is indicated in order to determine the moisture content of the body. The paper &c. a is drawn over a pair of bars &c. 1 on which is slidably mounted a receptacle 3 containing the condenser which consists of an upper perforated plate 6 and a lower unperforated plate 5, the hygroscopic body 11 being disposed between the plates. The body 11 preferably consists of a number of strands of reverted cellulose (artificial silk) and may be treated with hygroscopic salts, such as cobalt chloride, to increase its sensitiveness. To measure the capacity of the condenser, it is used as a tuning element in an oscillatory electric circuit, comprising transmitting and receiving circuits, the ccndenser being included in the receiving circuit.
