Catalytic apparatus; ammonia, catalytic production of from nitrogen and hydrogen; nitrogen oxides, catalytic production of by combustion of ammonia.-In apparatus for effecting exother. mic catalytic gas reactions at high pressure, such as the synthesis or the combustion of ammonia, the catalyst-holding tube is divided transversely into a number of separate compartments each supplied with reagents, and the reaction products from each compartment are united in a single conduit within the apparatus; the reagents enter the apparatus in a single stream which is divided correspondingly to the number of compartments. In one construction, Fig. 1, the catalyst is held in the annular space between an inner tube i and an outer tube h divided into compartments by partitions k and surrounded by a tube o. The reagents are admitted to the annular space between the tube o and the pressure-resisting wall a and pass to the tube i and thence through slots l into the compartments. The reaction products leave the compartments by openings m and are withdrawn through the annular space between the tubes o, h. In another construction, Fig. 2, the catalyst is held in a tube r divided into compartments by slides s, and the pipe v, which admits the reagents, carries perforated branches w leading one to each of the compartments. The reaction products are withdrawn through a pipe y.
