Abstract
275,748. Nicolas, H. B., and Fothergill, T. R. May 26, 1926. Etching.-In the production of etched designs on printing rollers or plates, for printing textile fabrics, the surface of the roller &c. is first " lined " by coating with varnish and removing the varnish in lines, dots. or small designs, the portions of the surface which are to be etched are then covered by a stencil, etching resist is applied to the uncovered portions, the stencil removed, and the surface etched. To produce gradations in tone, the etching may be carried out in stages, each stage being preceded by the application through a stencil of resist to certain previously etched portions. The stencil, which may be of paper or of waxed fabric, is preferably secured to the roller by pieces of paper which can be easilv broken to remove the stencil and which, in conjunction with register marks on the stencil and roller, facilitate the accurate registration of the stencil on a number of rollers. If lines of the design are too fine to be formed on the stencil, the latter may be cut away at such portions and the resist after application to the roller, may be coated with white lead or other pigment and the lines scratched through to the metal.
