To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AY Orrs BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bogota, in the county .of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a Form of Plates and Rollers to Ornament Materials, of which the following is a specification.

The invention provides a method for mak ing plates and rollers for ornamenting materials, whereby certain inner central areas within a design are removed from the print ing surface, leaving a peripheral edge; and the space within said peripheral edge is filled with absorbent material such as felt, cotton, or the like, the peripheral edge acting as a holding shoulder for the absorbent material.

More specifically, the invention provides for a method of making printing plates or rollers with a peripheral holding edge that is a component part of the base of the plate or roller, providlng a depressed space within said holding edge, in which absorbent material may be inserted to act as a fountain pad. I

For purposes of illustrating my invention, I will describe and show its application to the making of plates for printlng fabrics, sometimes referred to as block printing, and I will use the photo-mechanical process as an example of the possibilities of saving time and labor through the application of the principles of my invention; but it will be apparent that my invention is equally applicable to the making of plates or rollers for ornamenting other materials than textiles; and that plates and rollers may be made according to my invention without employing the photo-mechanical process, such as, for instance, by tracings and transfers.

Referring now to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters represent corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents a section of a completed design. The letters (0, b, a, and 01' indicate different colors in the design.

In making this block'by the photo-mechanical process, different areas may be photographed and routed out separately, orelec tros may be made of a master roller as described in my previous application filed October 23, 1922, Serial No. 596,522, and in my application Serial No. 731,940, filed August 14, 1924:, of which this is a division; it being then necessary only to treat the duplicate rollers'in the same manner as above described.

It is therefore not my intention to limit myself to any particular method of providing the printing surfaces except as covered in my claims, It will also be apparent that an original plate r roller may be made from a tracing and y transfer process, with all the printing surfaces thereon, the roller then being etched or engraved by hand and duplicates being made from the original, and. the duplicates treated as herein described in order to procure the fountain inking surface features.

Having thus described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is 1. The method of making a printing device for ornamenting material comprising the transferring of a design to be printed to the printing surface, the routing out of an inner area of the design leaving a peripheral holding edge of the printing surface around said routed-out area, and inserting an absorbent material in the routed-out portion.

2. The method of making a printing roller for ornamenting material, comprising the transferring of the design to be printed to the printing surface, the routing out of an inner area of the design leaving a peripheral holding edge of the printing surface around said routed-out area, and inserting an absorbent material in the routed-out portion.

3. A printing device comprising a base, a peripheral holding edge, an inner' central area Within said peripheral edge depressed in relation thereto and forming a component part thereof, and absorbent material inserted in said depressed area.
