Abstract

May 12, 1926. 1: 3 - di(4<1> - alkoxyphenylamino)naphthalene and its derivatives are produced by heating a naphthylamine sulphonic acid having a sulpho group in the meta position to the amino group with a p-alkoxyaniline or a derivative thereof. According to an example the acid sodium salt of 1-naphthylamine-3: 8-disulphonic acid is introduced into molten 4-anisidine and the mass stirred. Water and 4-anisidinehydrochloride are added and the mixture heated until evolution of sulphur dioxide ceases. On pouring into dilute hydrochloric acid and ice, 1 : 3-di(4'-methoxyphenylamino)naphthalene-8-sulphonic acid is obtained by filtering and washing. Similarly by using the mono- or di-sodium salt of 1-naphthylamine-3: 6: 8-trisulphonic acid, the 1: 3-di(4'- methoxyphenylamino)naphthalene - 6: 8 - disul - phonic acid is obtained. Naphthophenazine dyestuffs are produced from 1 : 3-di(4<1>-alkoxyphhenylamino)napthalenes or derivatives thereof by condensation with an aromatic nitroso compound or by joint oxidation with 1 : 4-phenylenediamine or a derivative thereof which contains at least one free amino group. In an example, 1 : 3- :di (4<1>-methoxyphenylamino) naphthadene-8-sulphonic acid in neutral alcoholic solution is oxidized at elevated temperature in the presence of the sodium salt of 4-aminodimethylaniline-3-sulphonic acid by means of air, a copper oxide ammonia solution having been added. The dyestuff which is precipitated dyes wool in greenish-blue shades fast to light. In a further example, p-nitrosodimethylaniline is condensed with 1 : 3-di(4<1>-methoxyphenylamino) naphthalene 6 : 8-disulphonic acid by boiling in alcoholic solution.
