Oscillating drums; air, controlling direction of flow of.-Apparatus for the liquid treatment and drying of yarns and fabrics without intermediate handling, comprises readily removable carriers supported in open bearings on a frame lowered into a vat, the carriers being rotatable in any position of the frame by a motor on the frame, and the vat being provided with an airtight, cover fitting on to the frame and with exhausting and circulating apparatus. The carriers 9, comprising diametrically opposed bars 9<a>, are supported in open-top bearings 8, 10 on the frame 2, and are rotated by the engagement of pins 16 with lugs 17 on the gear or worm wheels 6 which are driven through reversing gear 24 by a motor 25. From the carriers 9 are suspended dividing rods or rollers 18, while further dividing rods 19 are arranged longitudinally on the frame. The cover 29 is suspended from arms 31 pivoted on the vat. After circulation of the liquid by a pump 32 through heating vessels 34, 33, the vat is emptied for drying, the circulation being maintained through vessel 34 acting as a cooler precipitating moisture and through vessel 33 acting as a re-heater; or by exhausting direct to atmosphere through valve 36 and isolating vessel 34, a partial vacuum may be created in the vat, which may be simultaneously heated by steampipes. The frames are raised or transferred to other vats, with the carriers still rotating, by a hoist 27 on an overhead track, and have taper positioning-guides 4.
