April 28, 1926, Hydrocarbons, distilling and cracking. - In plant for distilling and cracking oils in which crude oil is preheated by the residium and also by the vapours and condensates, the various streams of preheated oil or mixtures of vapour and oil are passed into a mixing vessel prior to passage into a vapour-separating chamber. In the topping plant shown in Fig. 1, a mixing vessel a receives two streams of heated crude oil, the first of which passing through a pipe 1, is heated in a heat-exchanger c by residual oil from a vapourseparating-chamber b and in a pipe still d, and the second of which passing through a pipe 2 is heated in heat-exchanger e by the condensate from a fractional condenser f and in a coil in the condenser. The mixed liquids from the vessel a pass to the vapour separator b, and the vapours pass through fractional condensers fc<1> f; fc<2> to a final condenser g. A part of the condenser may be passed through a branch circuit comprising a still and vapour superheater as described in Specification 188,058, and the cracked vapours may be passed into the vessel a. The branch circuit may comprise means consisting of a pipe still and vapour-separating chamber for cracking the oil under pressure in the liquid state and the residual oil from the chamber b may also be cracked under pressure and the vapours passed into the vessel a. The branch circuit in which the condensates are cracked may comprise an apparatus of the kind described in Specification 135,015 for cracking the oils partly in the liquid phase and afterwards in the vapour phase.
