Abstract
274,528. Thornton, J. E. Feb. 18, 1926. Kinematograph apparatus. - A spool case comprises two spools, two leader strips permanently secured to the spools and to the ends of a film, a gate, and a reciprocating claw or equivalent feed device for feeding the film in either direction, the case being provided with ar opening or openings for connection with external driving means carried by e camera or projector and with an exposure aperture. The case A Fig. 7, may have the gate K and exposure aperture a at one end, the pay-out spool D behind the gate, and the take-up reel C behind the spool D; alternatively the positions of the spool and reel may be reversed, or, as shown in Fig. 8, the gate and aperture a may be placed centrally in one of the long sides of the case, the images being arranged on the film with their vertical lines either parallel to or transverse to the edges of the film. The case may be provided with a single-width film having one series of images, a single-width or double-width film having two series of images, one exhibited during each direction of feed, or with two single-width films having their images relatively inverted. The feed claw B may draw the film over idle rollers directly from the spool D, or a single sprocket, or a pair of sprockets F, Fig. 7, may be arranged to feed the film from the spool D to the claw and from the claw to the reel C, idle rollers f<1> being provided to guide the film or hold it against the sprockets. The claw B is mounted in a slide b, and is reciprocated by a continuously rotating wheel b<1> mounted on a shaft B<1>, the shaft B<1> and the cores 0', D<1> of the spool &c. being hollow and having crown teeth or other means to form a clutch connection with spindles carried by a camera or projector and extending within them. The spool case may be provided with a sliding shutter covering the aperture a, with a chamber H<1>, Fig. 7, large enough to contain a prism h<1> which reflects the light from an outside, lateral, source through 90‹ to the film, or with a chamber large enough to contain a lamp and condenser. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 8, it mav be shaped to form an external lamp chamber having a light aperture a<1>. The spool and reel may be alternatively or simultaneously driven by mechanism carried by the camera or projector, and of the type described in Specification 272,737, or such mechanism may be carried within the case. A construction is described wherein the spool or reel is driven by the camera &c., and an internal rubber-covered roller, held against both coils of film, drives the other reel or spool. The spool case may be stamped, drawn, or moulded, from sheet aluminium, bakelite, &c., and may be formed with tubular pillars to carry the spool etc.; it may comprise two shallow trays, fitting one over the other, and secured by secret means. The leader strips may be secured to the spool and reel in the manner described in Specification 272,737, and may be of paper, film, a double thickness of linen tape or parchmentized paper, or a line tape with paper each side; they may be provided with means to prevent the claws from feeding the film beyond such means. The spool and reel may be with or without flanges, and the spool case may be provided with any suitable form of intermittent shutter.
