Abstract
273,360. Thornton, J. E. Feb. 24, 1926. Kinematograph apparatus.-A spool case comprises two spools, two leader strips permanently secured to the spools and to the ends of a film, and a gate, the case being adapted for engagement with a camera or projector having a feed claw or claws which enter the case to feed the film in either direction. The case mav have the gate K and exposure aperture a at one end, the pay-out spool C behind the gate, and the take-up reel D behind the spool C; alternatively, the positions of the spool and reel may be reversed, or the gate and aperture may be placed centrally in one of the long sides of the case, the images being arranged on the film with their vertical lines either parallel to or transverse to the edges of the film. The case may be provided with a single-width film having one series of images, a single-width or double-width film having two series of images, one exhibited during each direction of feed, or with two single-width films having their images relatively inverted. The feed claws E may draw the film directly from the spool C. or a single sprocket F'. Fig. 5, or a pair of sprockets F, Fig. 9, may be arranged to feed the film from the spool C to the claws and from the claws to the reel D. Idle rollers f may be provided to guide the film or to hold it against the sprockets. The spool case may be provided with a sliding shutter k<2>, with a chamber A<3> large enough to contain a prism which reflects the light from an outside, lateral, source through 90‹ to the film, or with a chamber large enough to contain a lamp and condenser; the single sprocket F<1> may itself constitute the chamber. The spool and reel may be alternatively or simultaneously driven by mechanism carried by the camera or projector and of the type described in Specification 272,737, or such mechanism may be carried within the case. Fig. 9 shows a construction wherein the spool or reel is driven by the camera &c., and a rubber-covered roller R<1>, held against both coils of film, drives the other reel or spool. The spool case may be stamped, drawn, or moulded from sheet aluminium, bakelite, &c., and may be formed with tubular pillars to carry the spools &c.: it may comprise two shallow trays fitting one over the other and secured by secret means. The leader strips may be secured to the spool and reel in the manner described in Specification 272,737, and may be of paper, film, a double thickness of linen tape or parchmentized paper, or a linen tape with paper each side; they may be provided with means to prevent the claws from feeding the film beyond such means. The spool and reel may be with or without flanges.
