Openers, cleaners, &c.-A machine for cleaning and teasing kapok, floss, cotton or other fibrous materials for filling mattresses &c. comprises two horizontal cylinders 21, 20, Fig. 2, joined by an inclined pipe 3. Each cylinder is provided with a central shaft carrying rods 10, 29 passed through holes in the shalt and secured by set screws. Each rod has at one end a flattened portion or paddle 11, 31, which can, by turning the rod, be set at any desired angle. Notched baffle plates 18, 36 are fitted in the cylinders. Each cylinder is provided about its central portion with an outlet 4, 22, the size of which can be regulated, through which refuse is thrown, the cotton &c. being retained by the air stream drawn in through the aperture. The material is fed to the larger cylinder 2 through an opening 1 and is fed by the rotating paddles towards the opening 4. Near the opening the paddles are adjusted to check the flow of material and to throw out any refuse which is liberated from the material. The paddles then pass the partly opened and cleaned material along towards the vent for the pipe 3. Opposite this vent the paddles are adjusted to cheek the flow and force the material down the pipe 3 into the second cylinder. In this cylinder, which is of smaller diameter, the paddles are set in such a manner that the flow of the material is across the spiral of the paddles. This cylinder is provided with an additional orifice 34 for air, and an adjustable opening 22 through which the remaining refuse is ejected. The paddles at this opening are set at a slight backward angle to check the stream of material. A fan 37 draws the treated material through the discharge pipe 21 round an angle into a pipe 41 and discharges it through one or other of the conduits 45. A valve 43 is arranged in a vent 42 at the junction of the pipes 21, 41. At the bottom of each cylinder is a narrow screen 12, 32 covering a pipe through which dust is drawn away by a fan 14.
