Abstract

274,448. Morkrum Kleinschmidt Corporation, (Assignees of Krum, H. L.). July 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Type-printing telegraphs. - In a selecting mechanism comprising a group of selectors set in different combinations by a locally-driven actuating device under control of a member which is placed in one or other of two positions by the received signals, means are provided for locking this member against movement during the intervals used for setting the selectors. Figs. 2, 4, 5, and 6 illustrate the application to a, selecting mechanism such as is described in Specification 245,149. To the armature 28 of the signal-receiving magnet 27 is secured the U-shaped end of a lever 29, the arms of the U being pivoted on studs 30, and the T-shaped free end of the lever is provided with arms 38 extending downwards for co-operation with arms 39 on the five selector members 12. The studs 30 are carried by a bracket 31 which is mounted upon a fixed plate 16 with provision for adjustment about a pivot 32. The magnet 27 is normally energized and holds the armature against the head of an adjustable stop screw 87, and a spring 34 moves the armature against an adjustable stop 36, Fig. 4, upon de-energization. A sleeve 97, Fig. 5, mounted upon and driven through a startstop friction clutch from a motor-driven shaft 21 and carrying the helically-arranged teeth 25, which effect the setting of the notched permutation members 41 through the bell-cranks 17 pivoted on a stud 18, the selector members 12, and the T-levers 40, carries also a cam 50 formed with five shoulders 51. As the sleeve rotates these act successively on a projection 48 from a lever 47 pivoted on the stud 18 and controlled by a spring 49. The end 52 of the lever 47 is formed as a knife-edge and, when the projection 48 is not in engagement with one of the shoulders 51, the spring 49 moves the lever 47 into position to enable the knife-edge 52 to co-operate with a knife-edge 53 carried by the lever 29 to lock this lever in one or other of its two positions. The arrangement of the shoulders 51 in relation to the teeth 25 is such that this locking is effected immediately prior to the engagement of an arm 39 with an arm 38 to effect the setting of a selector member 12. The knife-edge 53 is provided with a stem engaging a slot 55 in the lever 29 for adjustment to and from the knifeedge 52 and is secured in position by a nut 56. Start-stop mechanism. Each end of the sleeve 97 carries a disc 95, Fig. 5, separated by a friction washer 96 from a corresponding disc 94 on the shaft 21, one disc 94 being secured to the end of the shaft and the other being keyed for longitudinal movement thereon, and a spring 99 presses the discs into engagement with the washers. In the stop position the upturned end of an arm 101 on the sleeve 97 engages a lug 102 on the lower arm of a U-shaped member 103 pivoted at 104 to a plate 107 adjustable upon a plate 109 supported from the plate 16, and the upper arm of the U is engaged by a latch 105 pivoted to a hanger 106 on the plate 107. During the starting-interval the magnet 27 is de-energized and an arm 119, Fig. 6, on the armature lever 29 moves a plunger 116 which acts through a bell-crank 114 to trip the latch 105 thus enabling the member 103 to be moved against the action of a spring 111 by the pressure of the arm 101 on the lug 102. The sleeve 97 thereupon makes one revolution and is stopped by the re-engagement of the latch 105 with the member 103. Fig. 7 illustrates the application of the locking device to a selecting mechanism such as is described, in Specification 235,572. The startstop shaft 69 carrying the helically-arranged pins 68 which set the selector fingers carries also a cam disc 91 and a disc 93 provided with a bevelled edge for co-operation with a knife-edge 92 on a lever 90 controlled by the cam disc 91 and by a spring 89. The shaft is thus locked, during the setting of the selector fingers, in either position to which it has been moved under the control of the signal-receiving magnet 79.
