Abstract

274,350. Sunderland, S. Dec. 28, 1926. Gear-cutting.-In a geargenerating machine of the type in which a reciprocating cutter 4 is moved tangentially on a slide 2 in unison with a rotating blank 5 to generate the tooth profiles, the tangential movement is effected by means of an inclined cam member 6 which is moved horizontally to impart vertical movement to a bracket 14 secured to the slide 2. The member 6 which is operated from the usual cutter-traversing shaft 13 preferably has a travel of about 12 inches, and a series of members having different inclinations may be used for cutting gears of different pitches. Instead of changing the member 6, the pitch may be modified by altering the travel by means of the change gearing driving the shaft 13. Alternatively, the wedge 6 may be pivoted at 9 to a member 7 which has a surface sliding on the machine frame and is provided with rack teeth 7<a> driven by a pinion 12 on the shaft 13. Interchangeable bushes 10 may be fitted on a stud 11 to give different inclinations to the member 6 to cut gears of different pitches.
