Paints; water-paints; japanning. - Coating compositions adapted to resist chemical influences comprise artificial resin, or materials serving to produce artificial resin, and water glass, with or without silicic acid compounds, and clay or metallic oxides. The coatings are subsequently hardened by heat. In examples the materials to produce artificial resin are more or less reacted with partial or total separation of water, and to 2 parts of such product is added 1 part of a paste consisting of 16 2/3 per cent of water glass, 50 per cent of silicic or metallic oxides, 33 1/3 per cent of silicic acid compounds, and water. The water is sometimes removed before use. In one case when the artificial resin constituents are reacted to the end, a solvent such as alcohol or acetone is used to render the product viscous before adding the paste.
