Abstract

274,072. Carteret, G.. July 12, 1926, [Convention date]. Pigments. - Titanium oxide is precipitated from its hydrochloric acid solution to which a small quantity of sulphuric acid has been added or from its sulphuric acid solution to which a small quantity of hydrochloric acid has been added by heating to boiling in the presence of a powdered base of silica or aluminium silicate or a mixture thereof, so that the particles of the base are coated with titanium oxide. Purified kaolin or fossil silica or a mixture thereof are preferred. The acid content of the solution should be about one half that theoretically indicated by the hydrolysis reaction of the normal salt, e.g. Ti Cl4 + 4 H2O = 4 HCl + Ti (OH)4. In an example 30-60 grams of sulphuric acid are added to 2 litres of a titanium solution corresponding to 150 grams of titanium oxide and 15O grams of hydrochloric acid per litre. 700 grams of aluminium silicate or silica or a mixture thereof are added and the whole heated to boiling toprecipitate titanium hydrate. The paste obtained is washed, filtered and stove dried. The product is mixed with weak alkali to give a neutral or slightly alkaline end product, again washed, dried and is finally calcined at a cherry red heat.
