Ornamenting fabrics.- Portions are punched out of leather or like material, particularly cut shoe uppers or similar cut-out work pieces, and corresponding pieces punched out of other sheet material are inserted into the openings produced. To ornament a number of sheets in succession, the first sheet is placed in a machine and the parts are punched out, the sheet is removed and the punchings ejected from the punches, then a second sheet is placed in the machine and, after being punched, is replaced by the first sheet so that the punchings from the second sheet are ejected into the openings in the first sheet. Similarly, the punchings from the third sheet are ejected into the openings in the second sheet. and so on. Alternatively, the punchings from each sheet may be removed from the machine and the punch used to procure and apply punchings from a sheet of material of another colour or from a number of pieces laid side-by-side. In one form, Fig. 2, the machine comprises a support 1 for one of a series of work-holders 5 adapted to be placed in a set position below a multiple-punch plate 11 bolted to an arm 12 pivoted at 10 to the support 1. The ejecting- means of series of plungers 17 arranged inside the punches and carried by a block 18 slidably mounted in a recess in the end of the arm 12. When punching is to he effected, the arm 12 is depressed against the action of a spring 33 by a cam 11 turned bv means of a hand-lever 13, and for rejecting the punchings, a lever 14 fixed to a shaft 4 is turned whereby a cam 15 depresses the arm 12 until the punches contact with the work and a second cam 16 then engages and depresses the block 18. To separate the work from the punches, a spring-pressed plate 26 is arranged below the punch plate 11, and, to vary the action of the cam 15 in accordance with different thicknesses of work, a slidable wedge 19 is provided between the cam and the arm 12. The sheet of material is laid on a plate 5 and is clamped thereon bv wing nuts 7 bearing against the cross-bar of a U-shaped plate 6 and by springs 9 bearing against the end of each leg. A circular backing sheet arranged under the work is adjustable about a boss 24. Fig. 3, shows a power-operated machine comprising a punch plate 78 and an ejecting-plate 74, the former being reciprocated for punching by an eccentric 54 acting through a pin 58 and slot 60 and being moved into contact with the work by a cam 70, and the latter being actuated by a cam 68. The work is laid on a table 64 adapted to be moved along in steps by a crank 90 and rod 92 to position side-bv-side work pieces successively under the punch. A stripping-plate 82 is also provided.
