Abstract

.273,147. Whittaker, M. H., and Whittaker, H. M. Nov. 13, 1926. Assembling matrices.-A matrix-holder for .large display matrices or other characters, which are not set by the usual composing-mechanism of the machine, is adapted to co-operate with the - casting-mechanism in place of the usual lineholding means. The holder 1, Fig. 1, in which the matrices M may be assembled by hand or otherwise, carries a bar or rail 2 adapted to fit between the lugs of the matrices, and a movable retaining-device in the form of a plate 4, sliding on screws 5 and frictionally held in the upper -or lower positions. The holder is adapted to fit between the vice-frame 8, Fig. 2, and the mould 9, in place of the usual jaws 10 of the first elevator 11. Set-screws 12, abutting on the viceframe, enable, the matrices to be adjusted to the proper level. A sliding plunger 16 causes the operation of the vice. automatic stop 14 by the usual screw 18 in the first elevator.
