Abstract
272,266. Hatcher, E. C. March 2, 1926. Strainers comprising grids or gratings. - A strainer for liquids or gases is formed by a spiral or coil of wire of circular, rectangular or other cross-section, means being provided whereby the spiral or coil can be compressed or wound up to vary the distance between the convolutions whilst the strainer is in operation. A coil e, Fig. 1 in a casing c, having inlet a and outlet b, is seated at the top in a recess d and at the bottom against a bush g which screws into the bottom of the casing. The coil is supported externally by ribs on the inner wall of the casing and internally by ribs projecting from a liner t. Impurities separated by the coil fall on to a cap h and are removed when the latter is unscrewed. An upward projection p from the cap normally holds a valve j away from its seating l towards which it is pressed by a spring m. On removal of the cap the vahe is closed but on subsequent withdrawal of the bush g and, with it, of the valve seat, a space is left for the passage of matter flushed from the spiral, the convolutions of which will be opened by the withdrawal of the bush. The ribs on the liner may extend downwards to engage with slots in the valve, and a screw w passing through the extension q of the valve engages between ribs on the bush, so that the liner t, the valve and the bush may all rotate together, the liner dislodging matter from the coil. A coil 1, Fig. 3, is wound on a longitudinally grooved core 2 under pressure from a disc 11 carried by an adjusting screw 12. Fluid supplied by a bore 4 strains outwardly from the grooves 3 and is discharged through an outlet 13. When the coil is loosened the disc 11 closes the outlet 13, and the flushing fluid is discharged through a cock 14. A flat spring 25, Fig. 5, is mounted between two body pieces 20, 21, held together by a bolt 24 and connected respectively to supply and delivery pipes. The inner end of the spring is fixed to a tube 26 on the bolt, and the outer end is fixed to a ring 27 fitting closely between the body pieces but. rotatable relatively thereto so as to regulate the winding of the spring.
