Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. OVERLY a. citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to strainers.
The object of my invention is to provide a strainer adapted to be cleaned while in operation or under pressure.
With this end in view I have devised a strainer with a stationary strainer element therein and a cleaning chamber adapted to be cut off from the flow of the fluid; with means to clean the straining element while in its stationary position; and an access opening to the cleaning chamber whereby the refuse matter may be removed; a closure for said opening; also a cock or valve whereby sediment and the like may be discharged without removing said closure.
W ith these and other objects in view my invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing 1 represents a casing having an inlet 2 and outlet 3 with flanges as shown adapted to be connected in a pipe line. Said casing is provided with a removable cover 1a and partition walls 1b forming an inlet passage 4, a straining chamber 5 and a cleaning chamber 6 open at the bottom to give access for cleaning and having a closure 7 removably secured in place by bolts 8. The straining element which I have shown in the form of a perforated cylinder 9 extends from an opening l() in the upper wall of said straining chamber to an openingll in the lower wall thereof, the lower end of said cylinder having a flange 12 resting in an annular recess of a ring 13; said ring resting in an annular recess in the wall 1b. The upper end of said cylinder is provided with a flange 14 secured to the partition wall 1b by bolts 15.
A spindle 16 screw-threaded as shown extends through an opening in the cover 1a and rests at its lower end in a step-box 17; said step-box being supported by a bridge-tree l. rIhe opening in the cover 1a through which the spindle extends is provided with a stuffing box 18; and a collar 19 fixed on the spindle holds the spindle in place.
A valve 2O having a screw-threaded opening conforming with the screw-threads ofy the spindle 16 is provided with another opening 21 through which a guide or stop 22 extends to keep it from turning on the spindle, so that in operating the spindle inone direction by means of the hand-wheel 23 the valve will be moved from its position in the upper portion of the inlet passage 4 as shown in the drawing to a seat 24 in the ring 3, thereby cutting off the cleaning cham- Il preferably place the strainer with the cleaning chamber at the bottom so that the refuse matter caught by the straining element will drop to said chamber; but the valve 20 is made of slightly less diameter than the inner diameter of the cylinder` so that in its movement through the cylinder such of therefuse matter as still clings to the chamber will be forced into the cleaning chamber. When the valve is in its seat, the closure 7 can be removed and the refuse matter in the cleaning chamber taken away. The closure is then secured in place and the spindle operated to move the valve to its Ioriginal position shown in the drawing. The valve 2O and its seat 24 I preferably bevel as shown; and I further provide a nut 25 secured at the lower end of the screwthreads of the spindle; said nut having a beveled edge 26 adapted to fit a beveled annular groove 27 in the valve, so that when the valve comes to its seat the beveled edge of this nut will also be seated in said beveled annular groove and prevent leakage through the valve. The guide or stop 22 is screwthreaded at its lower end into the bridgetree and is held in place at its upper end by extending into a recess 28 in the cover 1a as shown.
I further preferably provide perforations 29 in the upper wall of the straining chamber to permit the flow of the fluid while the valve is passing the upper flange of the perforated cylincer, and any refuse matter caught will be washed into the upper end and through the cylinder after the valve has passed said flange and returned to its position in the upper portion of the inlet passage. A cock or valve 30 is provided which may be opened without removing the Cil closure 7 andrv While the cleaning chamber is under pressure or not as desired. By removingvthe cover 1a the perforated cylinder can be taken out for renewal or repairs.
I-Iaving thus described my invention I claim: f

In a strainer, a casin having a straining and a cleaning cham er and an inlet passage opening to said straining` chamber, tw'o strainer elements, means to clean one of said elements, said means being operative from` said inlet passage to an opening from said straining tosaid cleaning chamber and arranged to close said opening, the other strainer element affording a passagefor the fluid When said meansv is passing from said inletY to the straining'chamber, substantially as described. y

In a strainer adapted to be connected in a pipe line toremove foreign matter `from liquid being transmitted under pressurawith Y out interrupting they flow thereof, the combination of a casing having partitions forming an lnletkand outlet and' a straining and a cleaning chamber, said cleaning chamber having an access opening With a closure for same, a cylindrical Strainer element in said straining chamber extendingffrom an openmg. from said inlet to an opening to said cleaning chamber, a valve movable from said inlet through said strainer to close the` liquid being transmitted under vpressure Without interrupting the flow thereof,fthe combination of a vertical casing with horizontally extending inlet and outlet adapted to be connected in a pipe line and having N partitions forming an inlet passage, a straining chamber-and a cleaning chamber, said inlet, outlet and partitions being formed integrally With said casing, a removable cover forsaid casing adapted to connect said pas-v sage with an opening to said straining chamber, a stationary cylindricalk strainer element extending from said opening to van opening in said cleaning chamber, avalve adapted? to pass through said strainer element from the inlet passage to close the opening to said cleaning chamber, the partition between said inlet passage and straining chamber having perforations therethrough and said cleaning chamber having `an access opening with a closure for same, substantially as described.y
