Breast-pumps. -A breastpump and milk-collecting appliance comprises a cup 2, Fig. 2, of thick rubber or of glass, connected by tubes 3, 5 with a suction pump and a bottle B respectively. An enlargement of the tube 3 contains a filter 4 of sterilized wadding. The tube 5 passes through a cork in the bottle B and is provided at its lower end with a non-return valve comprising a disc 16, Fig. 3, seating on the end of the tube 5 and held in place by a sleeve 10 having an apertured concave base 14. The sleeve 10 is bayonetjointed at 12 to the tube 5. The pump 20, Fig. 1, is connected to the tube 3 through a flexible tube T and comprises a barrel, pivoted at 21 to a right-angled frame 22 adapted to be clamped at 23 to a table. The frame 22 carries a balanced disc 41 rotated by a crank 43 fixed thereto. The plunger-rod 44 of the pump is connected to the crank 43 by means providing a dwell at the end of the instroke and permitting adjustment of the stroke of the plunger. These means comprise a knob 45 on the rod 44 slidable in guides 46 of a member 46<1> the outer end of which embraces an eccentric 48 rotatable on the crank 43 and adjustably secured thereto. Adjustment of the stroke by the eccentric 48 is accompanied by a relative adjustment of two parts 25, 26 of the frame 22 in order to position correctly the barrel 20. In use, the outstroke of the pump, effected by rotating or rocking the disc 41 about its pivot, produces a suction in the cup 2, which is pressed against the nipple, and withdraws the milk. The suction is reduced during the return stroke and is released at the end of the stroke and during the dwell of the plunger through a U-shaped passage formed in the pump barrel and connecting both sides of the plunger. Lateral apertures 39 in the barrel 20, normally closed by screws, may be opened if desired to facilitate the inflow of air when the suction is released.
