Sack-sewing machines; starting and stopping gear.-In a filled sack sewing-machine of the kind in which the sewing-head is traversed relatively to the sack, the sewing-head and its actuating means are mounted on a carriage which can be removed without disturbing the control devices, the motor is mounted so as to counterbalance the sewing-head, the tracks are movable bodily to and from the front of the machine, the rails are inclined downwards towards the starting point of the traverse and a spring is provided to assist the gravity return of the carriage, and the sewing and traverse are controlled by independent clutches having a treadle actuation which may be adjusted so that the sewing and traverse may he started together or independently. The supporting frame of the machine comprises bars 9, 10 slidable in guide ways formed by standards 6 and spacing bars @ supported on a wheeled baseplate. A rack 13<a> on the bar 10 is engaged by a pinion 15 geared to a handwheel 18<a> which is provided with a manually operated stop paw. The tracks 31, 33 are secured to cross members 26, 27 which are adjustably secured to brackets fixed on the upright bars 9, 10, the right hand cross member having set screws for adjusting its elevation to varv the inclination of the rails. A control-bar 35 urged by a spring towards the right in Fig. 2 is mounted on screws on the cross members entering slots 38 on the control-bar and is controlled by a link and lever 40, 41 actuated, through telescopic shaft and coacting levers at the lower end thereof, by a treadle 51. The carriage for the sewing head and motor comprises an L-shaped frame 52 supported by two front and one rear wheel running on the tracks and carrying a bracket 62 on which the control-clutches are supported. The sewing-head is driven by a belt 64 and the carriage is traversed by a pinion 92 meshing with a rack 91, both belt and pinion being connected through the clutch devices to the motor driven pulley wheel 72. The belt 64 passes over a pulley 68 having a clutch-face which engages the pulley 72. The pulley 68 is mounted freely on a shaft 69 and is moved to engage the clutch faces by a yoke 77 actuated by a rod 79. The pinion 92 is driven from a shaft, rotated by a worm-wheel 104 geared to the shaft 69, and is clutch-connected to the shaft through clutch mechanism operated by a lever 119, 120' pivoted to a rod 117. The rods 79 and 117 are operated to actuate the clutches by a lever 112 having thereon a roller 113 which is held against the control bar 35 by a spring and is moved bv the control-bar to shift the rods on which it acts resiliently through interposed springs 118. Adjustment of the springs allows the carriage and sewing head to be started together or independently. A compression spring is provided for giving the carriage its initial movement in returning to the starting point after a seam has been completed and the movement is also assisted .by inclination of the rails. A projecting arm 135 is provided on the lever 120 which is engaged by a block at the end of the track so as to disengage the clutch and prevent the carriage running off the rails in the event of the operator omitting to stop the machine.
