Inductor machines; reciprocating machines. - An ignition generator comprises two magnetic circuits each having a generating winding, reciprocating armature flux-changing means for varying the reluctance of each magnetic circuit and means for timing the production of the E-M-F's so that two E-M-F's are produced simultaneously in the windings un each stroke of the reciprocating means. Fig. 1 shows a unit comprising permanent magnets 11, laminated cores 10 carrying high and low tension windings 17, 13 and a reciprocating armature or inductor 12, and parallel thereto is a similar unit as shown in end view in Fig. 2. Between the -cores 10, 10<1> of the two units is mounted a further set of laminations 33 and magnets. The windings are preferably connected as in Fig. 6 s) that the circuits of both of the low tension windings 17, 17' are opened when either interrupter 19, 20 or 19', 20<1> is operated. The opening of the circuits is timed to occur when one inductor has just seated on its poles and the other has moved away from its poles to a predetermined distance. The interrupter comprises a fixed contact 19 and a movable contact 20 carried by a rod 22 which passes loosely through a bracket 23 on the inductor and has lost motion relatively thereto so that the inductor moves through a predetermined distance before the circuit is opened. The inductor is carried by a bracket 41 loosely mounted on a rod 40 above which is arranged the drive shaft 39, The drive shaft carries a cam which effects the movement of the inductor against the action of a spring 53. For normal speeds, the cam acts on a separately pivoted lever 46 which engages a lug 44 on the bracket 41 and effects the downward movement of the inductor. For slow speeds, springs may be arranged to give a rapid movement of inductor after it has left the armature poles.
