Abstract

271,259. Zouckermann, A. June, 15, 1926. Electrically vibrated instruments.-A key-board instrument in which alternating currents are generated and combined to sound a loud speaker comprises as many small alternators as scale notes required, each consisting of a toothed disc 8<1>. Fig. 1, and as many coils 9 (with magnetized cores) as harmonics (including the fundamental) required. Each horizontal row of coils 9, Fig. 2 therefore corresponds to one toothed disc. The first vertical row of coils sounds the fundamentals; the second - - sixth vertical rows sound the first - - fifth harmonics of other fundamentals. The electric vibrations are produced with small intensity and amplified after combination, to improve the purity of the sound. The coils of the fundamentals, and of each order of the harmonics, are respectively connected in series to the primaries 10 of corresponding transformers. Connections from the secondary windings 11 to the amplifier 29 and loud-speaker 32 are made through resistances 14, 15 and tap contacts 28, so that the relative strengths of the harmonics, and consequently the timbre of the resultant sound, may be regulated. The coils 9 are normally shortcircuited, but depression of a key 17 permits current to flow simultaneously from the fundamental coil 18 and the harmonics coils 21, 24 - - 27.
