Abstract

271,233. Blakeborough, R. A., and Klouman, F. A. April 30, 1926. Sluice gates.-In mechanism for operating a sluice-gate so as to control the flow of water to maintain a constant level in a conduit served by the gate, a level is pivoted at one end to a float arranged to rise and float with the water of which the level is to be maintained and at the other end it moves controlling the operation of a prime mover for actuating the gate, and is mounted pivotally at a point between its ends on a block forming a nut through which passes a screw connected by gearing to the gate operating means. The gate a in the conduit b is operated by a rope c wound on drums d on a shaft e rotated by an electric motor g. A float i is located in a chamber h which communicates with the conduit b. The float is secured to a rod pivoted at its upper end to a level l, the other end of which is pivoted to a rod m adapted to operate a reversing switch n controlling the motor g. Between its ends the lever l is pivoted to a block o forming a nut on a screw p which is rotated from the shaft e through gearing r, s. When the water level is normal, the switch n is in the neutral position. If the level falls, the lever ! l is rocked about its central pivot by the fall of the float, and operates the switch to cause the motor to open the gate. The screw p is thus rotated, and the nut o moved in such a direction as to cause the end of the lever l connected to the switch to be moved back to its original position and the switch to be restored to the neutral position. As the water level rises, the float i rises, and the lever l pivots so as to bring the switch n into such a position as to cause the motor to close the gate. The consequent movement of the screw moves the block towards its original position. By a series of movements of the gate, the water level and the position of the gate are finally brought back to the original normal position.
