Abstract

271,193. Batten, J. B. March 9, 1926. Movable - abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; valve gear and valve actuating mechanism; packing.- The movable abutment of an annular chamber type of rotary engine consists of two pivoted plates E with meeting faces, each plate having a gap or notch which registers on each stroke with that of the other plate and the annular chamber as they reciprocate across the chambers. The plates are each carried by a shaft G which is rocked by means of a universally jointed connecting rod attached to a crank pin R on a half-speed gear U. The admission and cut-off valve h is also operated from the half-speed gear which rocks a member z in which a slide a linked to the valve h is hand adjusted by a lever n to vary the cut-off or to put the valve out of action. The valve admits steam for the same direction of running on both its forward and return strokes. This valve gear is duplicated for reversing and so connected that as one valve is put, out of action the other comes into operation. Two interconnected exhaust valves p are also provided. Packing plates v are placed behind the abutment plates E and connected by springs x tending to draw them together. A packing 3 is provided in the gap of the packing plates v and kept tight by a screw adjusted fork 4 pressing on the plates v.
