Abstract

270,992. Carlyle, J. L., and Scott &. Co., Ltd., E. Dec. 24, 1926. Sluice valves for use in apparatus for the extraction of oils, fats &c., from substances containing the same have two faces d, e which move towards or away from one another by toggle mechanism one of the faces d having a recess x closed by a perforated plate x<1> preferably covered by a layer of filtering material x<2>. The openings b, c are connected to the mixing vessel and to the residue recovery vessel respectively. The toggles j, k are pivoted to the members d, e and to nuts m screwed on a rod p, rotation of the latter causing the faces d, e to separate or draw together. Mutually telescoping guiding sleeves h, i are fitted to the faces d, e. The liquid passing through the filter x<1>, x<2> drains away through openings x<3>, x<4> and through an opening in the casing a to a collecting vessel. To collect the residue the faces d, e are drawn together by rotating the wheel p<1> and then moved bodily clear of the openings b, c by rotating a hand wheel v, the parts being guided by guide rails o and rollers on extensions of the nuts m. A semi-cylindrical flexible guard member y covers the seat g of the openings c during the residue expelling process and prevents residue lodging thereon.
