Abstract

270,884. Treglown, G. H., and Carter, E. April 17, 1926. Vehicle lamps, directing.- A dipping headlight is carried by a spring-operated disc or platform hinged on a socket or the like at the upper end of a tubular support, through which passes a flexible control means connected by a linkage with the disc or platform. In one form, the lamp is mounted in a socket b on a platform c pivoted at d between upstanding parts e of a member g having a socket h secured to a tubular support a fixed on the vehicle. The platform c is connected by a link q with a piston p to which is connected a wire k passing through a cap j and over a pulley m to a lever on the dashboard, a spring o being provided between the piston p and a tubular lining n and tending to raise the platform c into engagement with a stop-plate f. In a second form, the tube a is mounted rotatably in a casing a' and the lining n is secured by a rivet j<1> to the tube a and formed with a reduced extension n<1> to which is secured an arm s' adapted for engagement with a part of the steering-gear. The member g is formed as a cap fitting over a cup a<2> on the casing a<1>, provided with an arm a<3> having a stem a<4> which is fitted in the usual lamp socket on the vehicle. A stud on the cap g may be adapted to engage a notch in the rim of the cup a<2> to limit rotation, and the tube a may be returned to the normal position by a spring t secured to studs t<1>, t<2> on the cup and cap respectively. An anti-vibration spring o<1> may be inserted between a cap r and a collar o<2>, secured to the casing a<1>. In a third form, the lamp is carried by a stem 2, Fig. 4, on a platform 3 hinged at 4 to a cap g<1> having a depending part g<2> mounted on ball-bearings x<1> in a cup a<2> on the upper end of a casing a<1>, the lower end of which is offset so that the support can be mounted in a lamp bracket disposed above the dumb-irons of a vehicle. A flexible tube 1 is secured at the upper end to the part g<2> and provided at the lower end with an arm s<1> adapted to be operated by the steering-gear, a return spring connecting the arm s<1> to a bracket through which the lower end of the casing a<1> passes. The flexible control k passes through the tube 1 and is attached to a pivoted lever 6 connected by a link 50 with a lug 5 on the platform 3, a spring 10 tending to hold the latter on the cap g<1>.
