Abstract

270,854. Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Thomas, H. March 6, 1926. Driving-arrangements.-An electrically driven slicing-machine is so arranged that it is impossible for the motor to be clutched until it has been switched on at the machine or to be - switched off at the machine before the clutch has been disengaged. The. countershaft B operating the reciprocating carriage through a pinion E .carries loosely a sprocket wheel A driven in the usual manner from the slicing-machine shaft. The sprocket wheel is formed with one element 0 of a clutch and co-operates with a clutch element O<1> fixed on the countershaft. A spring H normally keeps the clutch elements in engagement and control of the clutch is effected by a pivoted lever F. A brake may be provided comprising a washer L between a collar on the countershaft and loose ring K and when the lever F is rotated clockwise. the brake is released and the clutch element 0 moves into engagement. with the element 0<1>. For operating the clutch and the switch, a lever 0 is provided, one arm O<1> of which moves between the arcuate bars S of a gate or quadrant. The bars S are formed with three pairs of notches 9, 10, 11 and the spring-retracted handle R on the arm 0<1> carries a pin 12 to engage with the notches. The lever 0 also has a clutchoperating arm comprising a cam face N with which co-operates an adjustable stud M on the lever F, and an arm 8 which actuates the motor switch T through a pivoted lever 3. When the handle is moved from the inoperative position 9 to the position 10, the switch T is closed, but by reason of the shape of the cam face N, the clutch arm remains stationary. In order to give the motor time to attain its full speed before the clutch is actuated, the bars of the gate are formed with recesses 14 of such a shape that some manipulation of the handle R is necessary in the position 10 before an abutment 13 thereon can clear the uppermost slopes of the recesses, and the necessary delay is thus obtained. As the handle is moved into the fully operative position 11, no further movement of the switch lever 3 occurs, but the cam face N permits the lever F to move under the action of the spring H so that the brake is released and the clutch operated.
