Continuous discharge apparatus with stationary containers.-In the acetylation of cellulose, the material is traversed through a chamber of small sectional area, and is subjected to temperaturecontrolling means and to the action of stirrers which are differently dimensioned and shaped at different points so as to give a suitable actinn upon the material in accordance with the physical condition. The apparatus may be a vertical cylinder 1 having a stirrer shaft 2 carrying the various stirrers. At the top, stirrers 3 - - 5 of small area such as of point, hook, or fork form are used to act upon the fibrous cellulose; lower down where the mass becomes stiff, rigid rods 6 - - 8 are used; and as the mass becomes thinner in consistency paddles 10 - - 13 are employed. Suitable baffles 16 - - 26 are provided and the temperature may be controlled by means of jets 27 - - 29 of heating or cooling water, the liquid being collected after use in gutters 30 - - 32. The materials are introduced at 14, and the product is withdrawn at 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an apparatus inclined to the vertical. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
