Plant protectors; plants, supporting. - An appliance for placing beneath strawberry and other plants for protecting the fruit &c. consists of a flat pad or mat having a central aperture and formed of straw or other like vegetable filamentary material. It may be provided with a radial or transverse passage or cut communicating with the central aperture.The straws &c. may be laid substantially parallel and fastened together by rows 3 of stitches, the central aperture 4 and the radial or transverse passage being cut afterwards. Wax may be applied to the stitching, and tapes may be provided on one or both sides of the pad when hemp &c. is used for stitching it. Wire may be used for fastening the straws together. The straws &c. may be gripped in a frame adapted to be passed through a stitching machine. The frame may comprise two or three parts adapted to be folded together to cause a folding over of the straws before they are stitched together, the folding over being from one or both ends. The straws may be fed continuously to stitching appliances to form a continuous length of matting, the band being cut transversely after spaced apertures have been made in it. The straws while being stitched may be gripped between a pair of continuously travelling bands, being fed to the bands by a spiked roller. Cutters may be arranged to trim the straws in front of the bands or spiked rollers. Instead of being stitched the straws may be woven into a series of threads, or may be fastened together by metal strips having punched-up tongues. A circular pad may be formed by winding a rope or strand of material spirally around a former, the strands being secured by radial rows of stitches &c.
