Protectors. - A device for preventing the unauthorised opening of a book comprises a clip or shield 26, Fig. 5, or a pair of connected clips or shields 10, Fig. 3, adapted to engage over the edges of the book cover at the front corners thereof, means being provided for locking the device in position on the book. The front portions 11 of the two shields 10 are connected by a metal strip 15, which is cranked inwardly at 16, and a closed metal band 17 is secured externally around the upper portions 12 of the shields. The shields mav be secured at the front edge of the book by a lock 20, Fig. 1, hinged upon one longitudinal edge 21 of the cover and extending over the strip 15 to the other edge 21 where it is secured. Alternatively, a lock attached to one end of a leather strap or flexible metal band may be secured upon the strip 15, the strap or band being passed around the sides and back of the book and engaged by the lock at its other end. The shield 26, Fig. 5, has a strap 28 secured at one end 29 to the stiffening band 17, and a lock 30 upon the opposite portion of the band 17 to secure the free end of the strap. The stiffening band 17 may be dispensed with, the end of the strap and the lock 30 being then attached to the side flanges 25 of the shield. The shields may be pressed from a single blank of sheet metal, leather, or other material.
