Abstract

270,014. Manton, A. W., and Price, C. G. Feb. 5, 1926. Tunnelling by boring.-A tunnelling machine comprises a shield and a rotary excavator head carried by a shaft slidable in bearings in the shield and driven through gearing arranged to maintain operative driving connection therewith during relative movement of the excavator and shield, means being provided associated with the shield for moving the excavator independently of the shield and further means for moving the shield independently of the excavator, said means being operable separately or simultaneously during the cutting operation. The shield is advanced by hydraulic rams 2, preferably double acting, and may have outer ribs 7, preferably adjustably pivoted, to prevent rotation. A gear case 4 is fixed to brackets 5, 6 within the shield and motors 17 to brackets 18. The motors, through chain &c. gearing, drive epicyclic &c. gearing within the case 4 whereby a shaft 9, slidably supported in the case, is rotated. The shaft 9 carries the excavator head 8 and is bored out rearwardly to form a hydraulic cylinder 19 in which works a preferably double-acting ram 20 secured to a cap 21 of the gear case, whereby the excavator is advanced independently of the shield. Spoil is raised by buckets 10 on the excavator and delivered through a shoot 11, belt, screw or other conveyer 13, and shoot 14 to a belt conveyer 15. Spades &c. 23 may be forced through the shield to assist in holding the latter when the rams 2 are out of action. An extensible cover 24 protects the shaft 9 from dirt &c. The cylinder 19 may have relief valves to limit the feed pressure and such valves may be controlled by a governor so as to open when the speed' of the motors falls below a given limit. Means may be provided, such as a lever on the shield operated by contact with the excavator, whereby, when the ram 20 is fully retracted within its cylinder 19, the pressure on the rams 3 is automatically cut off, or the shield may engage the excavator through rollers at this time, whereby overrunning of the shield is prevented. Specifications 270,007 and 270,008 are referred to.
