Abstract

269,687. White, A. E., (Bastian-Morley Co.). Jan. 26, 1926. Thermostats. - Valve operating mechanism for controlling the flow of fluid through a casing comprises a lever operated by a thermostat and a thrust member actuated axially of the valve opening in opposite directions and coacting with the valve to effect a snap action in seating and unseating. A casing 15 through which gas passes from an inlet 17 to an outlet 180, on its way to a burner, has a ball or like valve 23, guided by ribs 24, thermostat elements consisting e.g. of an expansible tube 25 surrounding a porcelain, or invar &c. bar 26, and a system of levers 16 which, upon movement of the element 26 to the left impart an upward motion axially of the opening 21 to a. pivotally connected thrust member 29. A coil spring 30 loosely mounted on a collar carried bv the thrust member supports the valve, which is unseated with a quick action when the tension of the spring overcomes the combined weight of the valve and pressure of the gas. An abutment 31 which engages a lever arm 18<ax> is adjustable by movement of a pointer 38 over a scale 39 so as to regulate the actuation of the valve to maintain any desired temperature within a certain range. A boiler 2 with a coil 7 heated by a burner 8 is provided with a thermostat mechanism 13 which under the influence of the temperature of the liquid in the boiler controls the flow of heating fluid to the burner.
