Abstract
269,239. Nessler, C. Jan. 9, 1926. Testing extensibility of human hair. - The specimen of hair is secured between clamps 10, 11 of which the former is carried by a lever 16- pivoted at 17 to the frame 18 and connected by a link 15 to a scale beam 14 pivoted to the standard 41. A weight 13 may be traversed along the beam 14 by means of a endless chain passed over sprockets and moved by a handle 45 and gears 44, 53. The end of the lever 16 moves a pointer 19 over a scale 22 thus indicating the stretch of thespecimen. The lever 16 is provided with a counterweight 23. A plate 25 is provided with a gauging notch 24 into which the strand of hair is first placed a pointer 26 engaging the strand indicating the quantity so as to secure the same quantity in each test.. At the beginning of a test one end of the strand of hair is placed in the clamp 10, the lower end being secured in a clamp 29 which may be rotated from a handle 31 through gear 32 so as to give the strand a predetermined twist indicated on the dial 36. The clamp 11 is then tightened on the twisted strand. The strand, previous to the test, is first placed in a boiling alkaline solution of a given strength, and a heating pad 50 dipped into the solution is applied to the strand to keep the temperature constant during the test.
