Abstract

269,226. Silica Gel, Ltd., and Chance. K. M. Dec. 17, 1925. Liquid-seal valves.-A barometric column is employed for normally maintaining a vacuum while allowing gas or vapour to escape when the pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure in vacuum absorption refrigerating - machines or other vacuum systems. The invention is applicableespecially to systems as described in Specifications 225,191, 228,136, and 249,109, [all in Class 29, Cooling &c.]. The vessel 2 containing a solid adsorbent adsorbs vapour from the evaporator 1 to .produce a refrigerating effect and is then heated to expel the adsorbed vapour the increase of pressure closing a valve 4 between the evaporator and adsorber. During the adsorption' period the sealing column preferably of mercury, in the pipe 5, prevents the entrance of air, but during the heating period vapour and air are discharged through the liquid. The pipe 5 may dip into a cup, and be graduated to serve as a pressure gauge, and it may be lagged or externally heated to prevent condensation of steam within it.
