Labelling.-A machine for labelling non-circular cans and packages comprises means for feeding cans &c. to chucks, rotatably mounted on an endless conveyer chain, pasting devices and a magazine for holding labels carried on opposite sides of the machine, and means for rotating the cans as they are carried along by the conveyer so that they contact with the pasting devices and the labels to affix the labels to the can bodies. The invention is shown applied to a machine for labelling oval cans. Chucks 13 are rotatably mounted on the flat links of an endless chain 12, each chuck 13 being formed with a toothed edge 15. The cans slide down a shoot 18 and are retained in position for feeding to the chucks by spring-controlled stop blocks 35. The chucks are held with their major axes longitudinally of the conveyer by guide rails 16, and engage the projecting ends of the cans in the shoot 18 to spread the blocks 35 and seat the cans on the chucks. The gear 15 on each chuck then meshes with a toothed rack 21 to rotate the chuck and the can. Pasting devices, each comprising a vertical shaft 22 formed with rings 23, and a disc 24 carried on a shaft 25 to dip into a paste pan 26 and contact with the rings 23, are positioned so that the paste, applied to the rings 23 by the discs 24, is spread by the rings 23 on the oval cans near the ends of the major axes, the label being pasted at its ends and in the middle. Each pan of the pasting device is vertically pivoted and forced towards the conveyer by a spring-pressed plunger 24, the rings 23 being thus pressed up to paste the cans. When the can has rotated so that the label is fully applied, a smoothing member 31, near the end of the rack 21, is adapted to press against the overlapped label ends to smooth out wrinkles, the chuck passing between inclined rails 32 which slope upwards to lift the can from the chuck and then downwards to deliver the can. Guide rails 16 hold the chucks from turning on the return journey. In a modified machine, not shown, for labelling cans with corners, each corner of the can may be pasted, and the first corner repasted to secure the overlapped end of the label.
