Abstract

268,936. Nardi, R. March 3, 1926. Pencil holders.-A magazine pencil holder comprises telescoping casing-members one of which carries a frame to which a locking-member is secured, the locking-member being engageable by a clutch in the other casing-member to hold the parts in telescoped condition, and an ejector cooperating with lead-carriers in one of the casing- members is provided for effecting the projection of the leads. The casing-members 25, 31, Fig. 2, the former of which carries a tip 27, are provided with shoulders to limit their relative outward movement. A frame 33 is fixed in the member 25 and is formed with a number of longitudinal grooves which converge towards the lower end. In the grooves are mounted tubes 58 each having a polygonal rear end 59, Fig. 10, a screwthreaded portion 72, and a flanged forward end 60 provided with a side opening. The leadcarriers 63, Fig 2, are formed with a flange at the rear end adapted to be mounted in the opening in the flange 60, and with a slot 64 extended nearly the whole length of the carrier. The carriers pass through openings 65, Fig. 7, in a ring 66 mounted for slight play in the casing-member 25, the openings being provided with tongues 67 projecting into the slots 64 to prevent rotation of the carriers. The lead-propellers 69 are mounted in the carriers 63 and are formed with a screwthreaded part engaging the part 72 in the corresponding tube 58, and with a fin 70 projecting through the slot 64. Each lead carrier is surrounded by a spring 74 tending to hold the casing- members apart. A headed plug 36, Figs. 2 and 3, is fixed in the rear end of the frame 33, and is adapted to be engaged, when the casing-members are telescoped, by a spring-pressed clutchmember 42 mounted in a slot 41 in a member 40 secured to the casing-member 31. The clutch is adapted to be released by pressure on a pin 49 passing into the slot 41 through openings in the casing member and a pocket-clip 51, a shoulder on the pin preventing its removal. The clutchmember 42 is pivoted on a pin 43 to the upper end of which a gear-wheel 44 is attached. The gear-wheel is engaged by an internal gear on a rotatable cap 54 and is held in a recess in the member 40 by a washer 57 secured by a shouldered pin 56 which also serves to retain the cap in position. The two parts of the casing are relatively rotatable, and are provided with indicating, marks to show which tube 58 is opposite the pin 43. When the desired adjustment has been made, the casing-members are telescoped, the tube 58 opposite the pin 43 being prevented from movement and thus being projected, against the action of its spring 74, beyond the end of the tip 27. To effect a feeding forward of the lead relatively to its carrier, the cap 54 is rotated to cause rotation of the wheel 44 and pin 43, which is provided with a polygonal end engageable with the similarly-shaped ends 59 of the tubes 58.
