Piles, driving.-In machines for driving screw piles of the type in which a framework carries a power unit or units with gearing transmitting power to a central rotatable member which engages the head of the pile, the framework being prevented from rotating by anchored cables, means are provided for connecting the pile or cylinder to be driven with the central driving member by connections at or near the periphery of the latter. The hub and spokes of the central member or gear wheel are thus relieved of the driving stress. The means preferably comprise an adaptor of hollow truncated conical or similar form. Electric motors a, Fig. 2, on the framework k drive the central wheel g through worm gear and pinions e, f. The wheel g is secured to the lower end of a sleeve h mounted in bushes j. Vertical thrust between the wheel and the framework is taken by shoulders m on the hub. The wlieel g is formed in two parts, the outer rim carrying the teeth being bolted to the main body. In the rim are formed recesses g<1> to receive upstanding bosses o' on a hollow truncated conical adaptor having a flange at its lower end to which the upper end of the pile or cylinder is bolted. The adaptor is stiffened by ribs o<2>. A shoulder n is provided on the sleeve h to take the thrust when driving piles of small diameter the heads of which are engaged by the squared interior of the sleeve. In a modificafion the wlieel g, Figs. 3 and 4, is connected to the pile through an adaptor p of truncated inverted conical form having a flange q at the lower end to which the pile is bolted. The upper end of the adaptor has a number of upstanding box-like members r which enter segmental openings s in the wheel near its periphery. The inner walls of the members r lie against a rib u on the wheel, to which they are bolted. The drive is taken by the ends of the members r bearing against the ends of the openings s in the wheel. The rim which carries the teeth x and in which are formed the openings s is bolted to spokes extending from the hub which is mounted in the framework as above described.
