Abstract

Hand and foot actuation; actuated by motor controlling appliances.-Means for latching the brake lever of a motor vehicle in the applied position is adapted to be released by the driver's foot in moving to actuate the accelerator pedal. When the brake is in applied position, a lip 19 on an arm 18 carried by one end of a hollow shaft 10 engages a part of a U-shaped abutment A, Fig. 5, on the brake lever L, and an arm 24 attached to a lever 22 carried in the other end of the shaft 10 extends into the car beyond the accelerator pedal P. Movement of the foot first actuates the arm 24 to disengage the lip 19 from the abutment A; and the consequent movement of the brake lever to released position causes an upward extension 35 of the abutment A to move under the arm 18 so as to hold the arm 24 out of range of the movement of the foot in operating the accelerator pedal. A coil spring encircling the shaft 10 is attached at one end to the shaft and at the other end to a bracket 11 supporting the shaft so as normally to urge the arm 18 towards the latching position. The arm 18 and lever 22 have extensions passing into the ends of the shaft 10 and clamped therein by bolts passing through L-shaped slots in the shaft and having nuts bearing against the inside surface of the shaft. The arm 18 is adjustable longitudinally and the arm 24 is attached by a strap 23 and bolt 26 to the lever 22 to allow of adjustments to suit different. vehicles. The shaft 10 is located longitudinally between its supporting brackets 11 by collars and set-screws. The brackets 11 are fixed by the gear-box bolts of the vehicle passing through slots to allow for adjustment.
