Abstract

267,617. Standard Telephones & Cables, Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). Dec. 18, 1925. Thermionic heterodune receivers. -In a super-heterodyne receiver comprising a local oscillator 8, detector 6 for intermediate frequency, detector 21 for audiofrequency, and amplifiers 13, 14, 15, 23, the detector 6 and local oscillator 8 are coupled by a resistance 9, which serves also as grid leak for the detector 6 and is of such magnitude (e.g. 2 megohms) that tuning adjustment of either of the valves does not affect the tuning of the other. A condenser 25<11> connects the plate of one amplifier to the grid of the next amplifier but one, in order to check undesired oscillations. The input coupling includes separately adjustable coils 3, 4, and similarly the reaction coupling of the local oscillator 8 includes separately adjustable coils 10, 10<a>. The secondary windings of the transformers 16, 17, 18 are designed to cooperate with the inherent reactances of the circuits, including the internal valve-capacities, to select the intermediate frequency. The filaments are in series and the grids are tapped off the filament circuit at such points as will give the required grid bias.
