Abstract
266,834. Molins, W. E. Dec. 8, 1925. Apparatus for setting-up collapsed boxes. In a machine for assembling the slide and shell of a slide and shell box, collapsed shells are fed singly from a pile to a suction element adapted to draw upon the broad underside of the shell and maintain it in a fixed position on the bed of the machine whilst a movable element engages one remaining side of the shell and opens it out completely, independently of an auxiliary abutment on or near the bed of the machine. A slide 20, filled with cigarettes bv the apparatus described in Specification 13956/15, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.]. has its ends folded over as described in Specification 169,341 whilst it is moved by a conveyer 1 to the shell feeding and opening mechanism. The lowermost shell of a pile is fed by a reciprocating table beneath continuously rotating rollers and a knurled sector 29. Rotating with the sector is a cam 32 adapted to press a finger 30 into engagement with the shell to check the progress of one side of it and deliver it above a suction member 34 at an angle to the conveyer 1. The member 34 grips the lower face of the shell whilst an upper suction member 36 is moved upwardly to open it out. The support 43 of the suction member 36 is carried by parallel links 44, 42, the latter of which is secured to a spring-pressed rocking arm 39 actuated through a bell-crank lever 37 by the main shaft of the machine. The oing action is limited by a stop 46 on the member 36. the stop pressing on the corners of the shell nearest the conveyer to keep the base of the shell flush with the table. This, in conjunction with a bowing of the top of the shell caused by the suction member 36, facilitates the entry of the slide into the shell. The movement of the rocking arm 39 is continued after the release of the suction member from the shell so that the arm 43, through the engagement of a stud 43<a> on it with a fixed stud 43b, may be lifted out of the path of the shell and slide, the arm being resiliently mounted on the link 42 to adapt it to pivot about the link 44 for this purpose. In a modification, the upper suction element is replaced by a hooked member whichraises the upper part of the collapsed shell.
