Abstract
266,489. King, A. A. Dec. 16, 1925. Light, treating diseases with.-Apparatus for the employment of ultraviolet light, particularly in the treatment of diseases, comprises a dished support 24 for a mercury vapour lamp (not shown) mounted above a chamber 2 to which air is supplied under pressure as by an electric fan through a flexible tube 3. The source of light is enclosed in a casing 15 surrounded by a hood 28. Air, for cooling purposes, is supplied to the space 29 between the casing and hood 15, 28 through apertures 22 and also passes into the casing 15 through an aperture 26. The space 29 is closed by a flanged ring 27 which may be apertured to draw atmospheric air through the space 29. A side branch 5 from the chamber 2 leads cooling air to a hollow member 8, an annular deflector 11 directing the current towards a quartz lens 6 from which it is reflected to an annular outlet 14. An annular member 13 on the hood 28 carries a quartz window 12. The lens 6 and the window 12 are in line with apertures 30, 17 in the members 28, 15 respectively to provide egress for the rays. The lens 6 may be replaced by a hollow quartz or other applicator, by a conical baffle directing a current of sterilized air along the path of the rays, or by a quartz cell in which chemical reactions can be carried out. Outlet apertures 19, 32, for air are provided in the members 15, 28, a conical light shield 20 being provided in the aperture 19. The support 24 is mounted on a ring of ebonite or the like insulating material which may be provided with sockets connected by flexible leads with the source of electric power and adapted to receive plugs forming the electrodes of the source of light. The lower portion of the chamber 2 is tubular and forms a handle for the appliance. When used for general irradiation work the member 8, the hood 28 and, if desired, the casing 15 also are removed. The appliance shown in the Figure is mounted on a balanced bracket arm forming part of a mobile stand in the base of which the fan supplying the cooling air is mounted. The Provisional Specification states that a carbon or tungsten arc may be used in place of the mercury vapour lamp.
