Abstract
266,437. Wohlers, F. T. Nov. 23, 1925. Resistance furnaces. - In the production of metallic chlorides, the rotary reaction chamber into which the chlorine is introduced is made of fused silica and is uniformly heated. The solid charge is fed into a funnel 48 attached to a feed elbow 49 having an agitator 60 in a feed chamber 47 so that vapours passing through the elbow 49 pass into the top 50 of the chamber 47 and thence by an exit 52 into a condensing-chamber 53. The feed chamber 47 and the condensing chamber 53 are mounted on a car 54 running on tracks 56, the car being held against the reaction chamber 8 and its stuffing-box 46, by a spiral spring 59. The silica reaction chamber 8 is surrounded by a resistance coil 9 coated with fireproof cement 10 and then covered with more cement as at 11 and set in firebricks 12 in an iron tube 13 which is closed at its ends by asbestos plates 14 and brass heads 15 to which the terminals of the resistance coil are attached, the current being taken through brush contacts 16 as the reaction chamber rotates. The lower end of the reaction chamber 8 opens into a chlorine chamber 30 through a stuffing-box 33 secured to the chlorine chamber. The projecting end of the chamber 8 is covered by an asbestos coating 31 in a metal cylinder 32. The chlorine chamber has a waste material container 44 which can be shut off by a slide so that it can be discharged without allowing escape of chlorine. Similar waste material containers 58 are provided in the condensing chamber 53. If necessary the feed chamber 47 may be heated to prevent condensation therein. In a modification, Fig. 5, the reaction chamber is connected directly to the chlorine chamber by a flexible connection 66 and connecting piece 67 suitably mounted so as to allow the reaction chamber to rotate.
