Abstract

266,193. Abbott, A. V. June 26, 1926. Retorts.-In a rotary retort for the low temperature distillation of coal or shale the charge is passed through a concentric chamber heated externally by a furnace, the heat from which is retained and distributed by vessels containing lead placed in pairs of concentric casings enclosing the distilling chamber. Coal is charged from a hopper 25 by a screw 27 into the annular space between pairs of casings 6 and 7 which are provided with inclined ribs 39, 41 and members 40 forming pockets to detain the coal during rotation of the retort and prolong the heating effect. The coke is discharged, by a conical screen 29 into a rotary air tight valve 33. The distillates are cooled by a cone 35 having cooling coils 36 and the tar condensed run off by a collector 37 and pipe 38. Burners 4 supply the heat which is conserved by steel vessels 9 filled with lead and disposed between channel members 10. Waste hot gases are led off by outlets 21, 23, and the gaseous distillates by outlet 31.
