Abstract

266,160. White, A. E., (Wiremold Co.). March 29, 1926. Circular looms. - Operating and guiding the shuttles- The warp threads 24 are moved up and down in slots 23 in a fixed drum 19 to form the shed, and the shuttle or each shuttle is moved in a horizontal circular path to insert the weft at the weaving point 62 by means of a corresponding notched driving-disc 70 on a shaft 71 mounted in a bracket 72 on a rotating cam drum 39, or on some other driving-frame rotating about the axis of the loom. The disc 70 is partly embraced by a block 75 on the shuttle provided with a curved lower part. A bevel gear 73 on the shaft 71 engages teeth 74 on a fixed gear 57, so that the driving-disc 70 is rotated as it moves around the loom carrying the shuttle with it, the notches in the disc engaging successive warp threads, so that friction is reduced. The outward pressure of the shuttle due to centrifugal action is taken up by the engagement of one or more oil-soaked wooden shoes 66 on the shuttle with a fixed annular bearing surface 69 formed by an annular slot with an inclined wall 77 in the inner face of the drum 19. The block 75 may be formed of oil-soaked wool, and the driving-disc 70 of polished metal, such as steel, or vice versa. The shuttle is supported at its inner end by a slotted warp ring 53 fixed to a plate 55 secured to the fixed gear 57, the hub of which is secured to a fixed hollow shaft 40. A ring 83 on a hub 81 secured to an arm 82 extending from the fixed drum 19 prevents upward movement of the shuttle. Shuttle construction. The shuttle frame 52 has a guide 63 with upper and lower bars 64, 65 for forcing open the shed. The weft from the spool 59 passes through a tensioning device 61 to a guide 86 on a plate 84 adjustably secured to the frame 52, a rounded part 87 on the plate 84 assisting to open the shed. Each shoe 66 is secured to the shuttle by a screw, and the block 75 is secured in a socket in the shuttle. Warps, guiding and shedding &c. The warp threads are guided by fixed eyelets 25, 26 and after passing through the slots 23 are shed by healds 28 having shoes 36 operated by camgrooves 35 in a disc 34, 39 having a hub journaled on the fixed hollow shaft 40. The disc is driven by a bevel wheel 46 on a shaft 47 furnished with fast and loose pulleys operated by a strap passing upwardly through a platform 42. The fabric may be woven round a flexible core 79.
