Abstract
265,939. Motor Improvements, Inc., {Assignees of Liddell, R. P. F.). Feb. 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Filters having sheet filtering-materials. - A filter arranged in a lubricating system is provided with a bypass between its inlet and outlet channels controlled by a spring-loaded valve, with a test port communicating with the outlet channel, and with valve means between the test port and the by-pass to prevent flow of lubricant from the by-pass to the test port. A pump 11 delivers oil from the crank case 10 of an engine through a pipe 19<1> to the filter 22, the outlet from which is connected to a pipe 23 leading to the bearings. The pipe 19<1> is connected to a socket 34 in a fitting 21 which is secured to the filter casing 22 by a bolt 26 and nut 28, the bolt extending through a passage 27 in the fitting and through apertures in the filter units 25. The bolt 26 is square and thus provides channels for the discharge of oil from the filter units into the passage 27. Oil supplied through the pipe 19' passes through an annular recess 42 or ports 41 in a hollow plug 40 into a passage 33 leading to an annular recess 31 in the face of the fitting, whence it passes into the filter 22 through apertures 32. Oil discharged from the filter into the passage 27 passes through channels 35, 36 to the outlet pipe 23, which is connected to a socket 39. The plug 40 is arranged in a bore 38 communicating with the channel 36 and thus constituting a by-pass, and the hollow portion of the plug is normally closed by a spring-pressed ball 44. A three-way valve 47 is provided at the intersection of the channels 35, 36 so as to permit the channel 35 to be brought into communication with either the channel 36 or a test port 48, but the handle 49 of the valve is adapted to engage a stop 49<1> so as to prevent the valve from being moved into a position in which both the channels 35, 36 would be in communication with the port 48. In a modification in which the passages in the fitting 21 are slightly differently arranged, a check valve is arranged in that portion of the discharge channel between the junction of the latter with the by-pass and the point at which a valved test port communicates with the discharge channel, so that, when the test valve is opened, the consequent drop in pressure causes the check valve to close, thereby preventing oil from passing from the by-pass to the test port.
