Abstract
265,642. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). Aug. 8, 1925. Annealing; hardening. - In a method of developing high permeability in a loading material for conductors, said material containing iron and nickel, the material in strand form is heated to above 800‹ C., cooled quickly from at least 600‹ C., mechanically worked to give it the requisite hardness and then finally heat-treated either before or after its application to the conductor. In one method for the initial heating of the material, the permalloy strand 14 is passed over the contact rollers 15, 16, 17 to which current is supplied from a transformer 18, being kept during the heating in a hydrogen atmosphere in a chamber 20. The wire passes from the roller 17 into a cooling chamber. In another method the strand is locally flash-heated and its rate of cooling controlled to cause a rapid loss of heat below a predetermined temperature such as 500‹ C. The final heat treatment may be accomplished as in Specification 188,688 or after its application to a copper conductor by locally flash-heating to 900-1275‹ C. cooling in air. reheating to approximately 600‹ C. and then cooling at a rate of about 15‹ C. per second.
